Discussion:
double birthdays in Kontact Calendar after sync

Hello,

I am running
KDE 4.4.4 release 3 under openSUSE 11.3 (i586)
After having spent a good deal of time I have finally succeeded in
synchronising KDE Kontact with my HTC P3450 under Windows Mobile 6
Professional using the command line tool msynctool.
I have tried a lot of different settings but it did never work with
KitchenSync (the masterpatricko version)...
As a result I have found the contacts of my HTC updated with the contacts of
KDE PIM but nothing happened on the KDE PIM side.
The calendar of KDE PIM was updated with the events from the HTC. I cannot
tell whether it went the other way round because I rarely use the Kontact
calender.
Anyway, the Kontact calendar showed a lot of double birthday entries after
synchronisation. Many of them one day before the actual date!
I have the impression that the contacts to be synchronised were put into
second address book, not the one Akonadi is using.
Can somebody tell me what to do to overcome this strange behaviour?
Any hint is most welcome!

Best regards,

Klaus

Can you describe your akonadi collection configuration in more detail?
ie. if you open the akonadi configuration, what are all the different
collections shown?
Also did you do the manual configuration of libopensync-plugin-akonadi
or did you leave it as defaults?

I have not used libopensync-plugin-akonadi because I had read that it works
only for KDE 4.5 and higher. So, I have used kdepim-sync plugin instead. The
only configuration I have done comes from KitchenSync.

Tell me if you need more information (and also where to find them).

Thank you for your hint, Tejas!

That's what I had already done while waiting for your reply. In fact, I've
used my installation openSUSE 11.3 as a playground. I've tried a lot of
different things. In particular I've used the libopensync-akonadi-plugin
instead of the kdepim-sync-plugin . Finally I've succeded in synchronising my
contacts as well as my calendar. And, I've learnt a lot about how it works.
Once done I've abandoned openSUSE 11.3 and have installed SUSE 11.4 x86_64
with KDE desktop from scratch. Now everthing works fine. I can synchronise my
HTC WINDOWS MOBILE device with KDE KONTACT. I'm only intrested in
synchronising contacts and calendar. But this works fine.
There's only one thing that bothers me: The birthdays calendar shows all
birthdays by one day before, e.g. on 16th instead of 17th.
I would like to thank you for everything you have done for the community and
for people like like me!
To give something back of what I've received I'd like to drop a few hints for
all who want to synchronise their WINDOWS MOBILE PDA under openSUSE:

Don't mix packages from different repositories. Use only the official
repositories of openSUSE. Just go to openSUSE.org -> Get it -> search for
"synce" and choose your appropriate collection.
I had an error message saying "unable to read from plugin "synce-opensync-
plugin" but this seems to be of no importance, since the SynCE KDE PDA Manager
worked fine. I could create a partnership between my PDA an Kontact without
any problem.
Don't forget to have sync-engine running in a terminal window while creating
the partnership!
Then, if you work with Akonadi, got to
http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/opensync-plugin-akonadi?content=132900
and choose your openSUSE release. Although it says "unstable playground" I
haven't experienced any probleme.
Once installed configure KitchenSync and start it afterwards. During the first
synchronisation you will need some patience, because depending on the number
of contacts / events it will take some time. But you can can see the progress
on the status line on top right.
Good luck and enjoy it!

Best regards,

Klaus
